Madison, GA
We wanted to break up our drive to our ultimate destination in Andersonville, GA for Thanksgiving and wanted to stay at Whitetail Ridge, another COE campground, as our final stop before Andersonville. Looking for a place that divided the distance between Twin Lakes Campground and Whitetail Ridge, we found this campground that had availability and met the location criteria. Besides that, there isn’t much good to say about the park. We think it would make a nice one night stop as it is easy to get into and all the short-term sites are pull throughs. Booking this location for 4 nights was probably a mistake but we are here and trying to make the best of it.
Downtown Madison is nice with some interesting architecture and history. The courthouse is quite striking and given the lack of other subject matter, makes the featured photo for this posting. We made a couple of trips to walk around the downtown area, making the second trip to primarily stop for an ice cream cone from the local shop, since the weather during the first trip was too cold and dreary.
Since the weather on Saturday was clear and sunny, we took a short drive west of our location to Hard Labor Creek State Park for a hike through the woods. The park also has a campground that we walked through while we were there. The sites in this state park were large enough and accessible enough for our rig and the stay would have been similar to Twin Lakes. When looking for places to stay, the problem with the state parks is the weekends tend to be booked and we needed a location to get us through the weekend. We did add this state park to our slowing growing list as a potential place to stay in the future. While we were hiking the nature trails, the park was hosting an orienteering competition and the woods were full of control flags.
Since the free cable was not working, we weren’t able to watch any football on Sunday. So, we opted to see the movie, “Bohemian Rhapsody“, since Amy is a Queen fan. It was a fascinating but tragic story of an exceptionally talented musician as well as a phenomenally talented and versatile musical group. Afterwards, we went to a sports bar to watch some football while we ate lunch.
Ah yes, the dreaded weekends. It’s hard for our NY minds to accept the fact that people are still camping on the weekends in November. Especially since we have snow up north.
I hope you are going to Whitetail Ridge. It was a HUGE favorite with us.
As for those questionable campgrounds…I tend to hold back on making a full multi-day reservation (unless it is the dreaded weekend). I like to kick the tires before I totally commit. I can always wander back to the office and reserve a couple more days. Some places will put a hold on the site for the remainder of the days if you aren’t sure how long you will be staying.
Keep on keeping on!!!! You guys are getting the hang of this!
“Hard Labor Creek” should be added to your list of amusing place names.
