Fort Stockton, TX
We spent 5 days in First Stockton at the Hill Top RV Park. The park is nice and well kept but there really isn’t much to do around Fort Stockton. We spent most of our time in and around the RV and enjoyed a quiet Christmas Day with just the two of us.
We did visit a local wine tasting saloon on our first afternoon in town. The Grey Mule Saloon is an old historic building in downtown Fort Stockton that was recently turned into a tasting room for one of Texas’ largest wineries. The wines were pretty good and we restocked our supply. After Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, we will need to restock again soon.
We walked around the RV park several times during our stay, both during the day and in the evening after dark. The park is located at the top of a hill and overlooks I-10 towards the west. Directly across I-10 is a famous metal cutout of the US Cavalry that we photographed one evening at dusk. Amy also got a nice shot of the colorful Christmas Tree using her iPhone.
This was our first Christmas without all 3 of our children spending the holiday with us. With today’s technology, we were able to do the next best thing and conducted a group FaceTime conversations. We are here in Texas, Katie was in Los Angeles with J.C.’s Mom, Willa, Doug was in Albany, NY with Sarah and her family and Kristina was in New York City with Rob and his family. We chatted for almost an hour and it was nice to have some “family time”. We grilled steaks for Christmas dinner and would have eaten outside had the winds not picked up. We felt the RV rocking all night as the area experienced gusts of close to 40 mph. There will be more of that to come in the days ahead.
On Wednesday, our last full day in Fort Stockton, we drove into town to checkout another roadside attraction. For reasons unknown, there is a large statue of a Road Runner in the center of town so a trip to photograph it seemed appropriate and pretty much sums up the excitement that exists here in Fort Stockton, TX.
