Solar at Spring Branch RV Park

Spring Branch, Tx

Back in early August, I made arrangements to have solar power professionally installed on our RV the week of December 10th at Spring Branch RV Park in Spring Branch, TX.  We arrived here on Sunday the 9th and our installer, Bill Murray, stopped by a couple hours later to look things over and formulate a game plan.  At this time he left the six 180 watt panels and the two 300 amp hour batteries at our location.  The installation would begin the next morning at 8:30 am.

We arrived November 17, the Saturday before Thanksgiving to spend the week with Amy’s folks.  The city campground is located just down the road that is across the street from their house.  Our arrival, however was not a happy one as we had issues develop as we left Whitetail Ridge Campground and drove to Andersonville.  About halfway to Andersonville on I-185, we noticed a rather large crack in the windshield of the truck so that needed to be taken care of.  In addition to that, the 4 days of straight rain we sat through at Whitetail exposed the fact that our issue with water in the underbelly described in our first post was not caused by road spray as predicted.

Whitetail Ridge Campground (COE)

Lagrange, GA

First we’d like to thank our friends, Jim and Corinne, for recommending this campground to us.  We intentionally made it our last stop before spending Thanksgiving with Amy’s folks in Andersonville.  The only complaint we have about our stay here is the weather.  We arrived on Monday, November 12, to a steady hard rain and it pretty much stayed that way until Thursday.  Thursday didn’t rain (much) but it remained gray, cold, and breezy.  This campground is another Army Corps of Engineers campground like the one we stayed at near Clemson.  Like Twin Lakes, this campground is on a manmade lake, West Point Lake, and there are 3 other COE campgrounds on the lake.  Maybe someday, we’ll check those out as well but it will be hard to come back to the area and not want to stay here again.

Twin Lakes Campground (COE)

Pendleton, SC

We arrived at Twin Lakes Campground around 2:00 in the afternoon with bright blue skies and warm temperatures.  When we found our campsite, the only challenge to getting in was the slope down to where the site leveled off.  As we backed the RV into the site, the change from the roughly 8% grade to the level area caused the rear hitch where we have our bike rack to dig a trench in the gravel site.  We were a bit concerned about this but it appears as though the Yakama hitch we bought was designed to handle such abuse.

Pride RV Resort

Waynesville, North Carolina

Leaving Damascus, in particular, Laurel Creek RV Park, turned out to be quite an adventure.  The park is located on the opposite side of the creek from Damascus and is accessed by a single lane bridge with a 90 degree turn on the RV park side.  Crossing the bridge and making the turn when we arrived here was a non-issue.  Leaving and making the turn to enter the bridge was another story altogether.  We did not swing quite as wide as we should have and as we were slowly making the turn it was evident that the side of the RV was going to scrape the inside guard rail.  We stopped and maneuvered back and forth and had to fold the mirrors in on the truck to allow it to move further over in order to finally get the RV to clear without scraping.  The driver’s side mirror’s plastic housing has a little scuff on it from where it rubbed against the guard rail (this gave us the idea to fold them in to gain more room) but other than that we got out unscathed.  The rest of the drive was uneventful and we arrived at our next destination to warm 70 degree sunshine.
