Country Boys RV Park

We wanted to break up our drive to our ultimate destination in Andersonville, GA for Thanksgiving and wanted to stay at Whitetail Ridge, another COE campground, as our final stop before Andersonville. Looking for a place that divided the distance between Twin Lakes Campground and Whitetail Ridge, we found this campground that had availability and met the location criteria. Besides that, there isn’t much good to say about the park. We think it would make a nice one night stop as it is easy to get into and all the short-term sites are pull throughs. Booking this location for 4 nights was probably a mistake but we are here and trying to make the best of it.

Twin Lakes Campground (COE)

We arrived at Twin Lakes Campground around 2:00 in the afternoon with bright blue skies and warm temperatures. When we found our campsite, the only challenge to getting in was the slope down to where the site leveled off. As we backed the RV into the site, the change from the roughly 8% grade to the level area caused the rear hitch where we have our bike rack to dig a trench in the gravel site. We were a bit concerned about this but it appears as though the Yakama hitch we bought was designed to handle such abuse.

Leaving Damascus, in particular, Laurel Creek RV Park, turned out to be quite an adventure. The park is located on the opposite side of the creek from Damascus and is accessed by a single lane bridge with a 90 degree turn on the RV park side. Crossing the bridge and making the turn when we arrived here was a non-issue. Leaving and making the turn to enter the bridge was another story altogether. We did not swing quite as wide as we should have and as we were slowly making the turn it was evident that the side of the RV was going to scrape the inside guard rail. We stopped and maneuvered back and forth and had to fold the mirrors in on the truck to allow it to move further over in order to finally get the RV to clear without scraping. The driver’s side mirror’s plastic housing has a little scuff on it from where it rubbed against the guard rail (this gave us the idea to fold them in to gain more room) but other than that we got out unscathed. The rest of the drive was uneventful and we arrived at our next destination to warm 70 degree sunshine.

Laurel Creek RV Park

We arrived at this small RV park in Damascus, VA on Tuesday. Backing into our site was a challenge as we didn’t have much room to maneuver. Since the backend of the RV was going to be hanging out over the creek bank, we took our bikes off before we started. The weather was sunny so we walked around town to stretch our legs. There are at least six bike shops in this very small town! Some of the local businesses, like the ice cream shop, are closed during the first part of the week so we had to settle for a beer at a trailside cafe that just opened.

Chantilly Farm Campground

After our stay in Harpers Ferry we made our way south on I-81 to Chantilly Farm Campground, located in the Blue Ridge Mountains just outside of the town of Floyd, VA. It is a beautiful setting of rolling hills and views of the mountains just starting to show signs of fall colors. The office that you need to check in with is located at the top of a relatively steep hill on a gravel road. When we arrived, they were backed up a bit checking people in so we decided to stop at the bottom of the hill and wait our turn as opposed to stopping halfway up. After we checked in, we were guided to our site that required a few attempts to back into properly. Once in, however, we were perfectly situated on our site.
