Snowy Egret plunging for something to eat

When we arrived in southwest Louisiana, just a few miles from the Texas border, it was sunny with temperatures approaching 80 degrees (sorry, friends in the northeast).  The name of this place makes most RVers cringe but it is a very nice suburban park with many pull throughs and all sites are level concrete slabs.  We got setup in our pull through site, put out the awnings and sat down for our new tradition of having a beer after our traveling for the day is over.  The weather prompted us to have grilled chicken for dinner.  Even though it was dark by the time we wanted to cook and eat, the LED lights on the awnings provided more than enough illumination to enjoy the warm weather while it lasted.  The next two days were still projected to be sunny but temps more in the low 60’s.

Tickfaw State Park

Springfield, LA

This park is only 8-10 miles off I-12 to the northwest of New Orleans but it certainly feels like you are in the middle of nowhere.  The roads into the park were pretty primitive and had us worried we were not going where we were supposed to be.  While traveling west on I-12 we passed an exit that had signage for the park but our GPS wanted us to take the next exit a few miles later so we did.  That turned out to be a mistake as the final turn necessary to get to the park was very sharp (> 120 degrees) and the road was sloped such that we crossed a pretty severe hump while turning.  Those who know how 5th wheels are hooked know this is not ideal.  We did scrape a bit of paint off a piece of molding as it came into contact with the truck bed rails.  We suspect, had we taken the first exit, we would have approached this intersection from the other direction, entered with only a slight turn and been better off.

Magnolia Branch Wildlife Reserve

Atmore, AL

Our site at Magnolia Branch Wildlife Reserve

This stop was uneventful and after our last stop, that is probably a good thing.  We are on a 2 week leg of travel from Andersonville, GA to Spring Branch, TX, where we will be having solar power installed on the RV.  We have 4 stops planned along the way with this one being the first.  The park is very quiet with less than a half dozen RVers camped with a capacity of over 50.  Our site is a pull through that is very wide and extremely long.  We could probably fit 2 of our trucks in front of the RV with room to spare.  Normally, we can’t park the truck in front of the RV without sticking into the road.

Andersonville, GA

We arrived November 17, the Saturday before Thanksgiving to spend the week with Amy’s folks.  The city campground is located just down the road that is across the street from their house.  Our arrival, however was not a happy one as we had issues develop as we left Whitetail Ridge Campground and drove to Andersonville.  About halfway to Andersonville on I-185, we noticed a rather large crack in the windshield of the truck so that needed to be taken care of.  In addition to that, the 4 days of straight rain we sat through at Whitetail exposed the fact that our issue with water in the underbelly described in our first post was not caused by road spray as predicted.

Whitetail Ridge Campground (COE)

Lagrange, GA

First we’d like to thank our friends, Jim and Corinne, for recommending this campground to us.  We intentionally made it our last stop before spending Thanksgiving with Amy’s folks in Andersonville.  The only complaint we have about our stay here is the weather.  We arrived on Monday, November 12, to a steady hard rain and it pretty much stayed that way until Thursday.  Thursday didn’t rain (much) but it remained gray, cold, and breezy.  This campground is another Army Corps of Engineers campground like the one we stayed at near Clemson.  Like Twin Lakes, this campground is on a manmade lake, West Point Lake, and there are 3 other COE campgrounds on the lake.  Maybe someday, we’ll check those out as well but it will be hard to come back to the area and not want to stay here again.
